7 Secrets to Protect Your Hair from Winter's Chill

The proper hair care for every season of the year is very important. However with winter’s chill you should provide extra attention to keep your hair healthy and luscious. Today I am going to share 7 secrets to protect your hair from winter’s chill and I hope you find them as helpful as my hair clients, friends and family do.

Tip 1: Always Dry Your Hair
In the winter, it is important to make sure your hair is completely dry before you leave the house. Allow enough time in your morning routine for your hair to air dry, or spend a few minutes blow drying your hair before you head out the door. Make sure you set your hairdryer to low or medium heat, as too much heat can damage your hair further. It's well worth your time to avoid the cold or sniffles that will inevitably invade your body, should you choose to start your day with wet hair!

Tip 2: Moisturize
The winter's cold air will steal the moisture right out of your hair. Look for shampoos and conditioners that specifically advertise that they are moisturizing, rehydrating, non-sulphate and color safe. Properly moisturizing your hair during the winter will keep it from becoming dull, frizzy, or brittle.

Tip 3: Massage Your Scalp
Itchy scalp is a common complaint during the winter months. You can alleviate this symptom by massaging your own scalp, or asking your favorite salon hair specialist to do it for you. Massaging the scalp releases your own natural oils into your hair, as well as promoting proper circulation and blood flow. You can use natural oils, such as coconut, olive, shea and jojoba, to massage your head.

Tip 4: Hot Oil Treatments
Extra virgin olive oil, straight from your kitchen cabinet, can work wonders for dry winter weather hair. You can also find single-use hot oil treatments at your neighborhood beauty salon or beauty supply store. Apply directly to hair and wrap your head in a plastic shower cap or hot towel (or both!) and voila! Instant hair repair!

Tip 5: Deep Condition
Add a dab of olive oil to your favorite conditioner and leave it on for an extra few minutes in the shower. It's common for your hair to lose a lot of its' natural nutrients when exposed to the cold winter air, so take the time to rejuvenate your hair. You can even find a dedicated deep hair conditioner at your local beauty salon or beauty supply store.

Tip 6: Low Maintenance Hair Styles
Having your hair hanging loose around your shoulders will have you playing with your hair, or finger combing it throughout the day. This constant handling of your hair can lead to shedding, as well as those awful split ends. Try keeping your hair in braids, wraps, low ponytails or even a french braid, to discourage playing with your hair during slow moments at work.

Tip 7: Use Natural Hair Care Tools
When possible, use hair care tools made from natural materials such as wood or ceramic. Using plastic bristled brushes can have a terrible impact on the integrity of your hair. Use combs when possible, to put the least amount of stress on your hair. Boar bristle brushes are wonderful for smoothing frizzy and dry hair.

Following these simple steps can go a long way toward ensuring that your winter hair is just as luscious and beautiful as it is during the rest of the year!
